Firing process - the kiln as a tool

What happens at which temperature during the firing process? Which materials have a similar melting temperature? Which materials can be joined/combined by using the firing process? What exactly happens to the clays/ceramic bodies during firing?

Glas-ing

This is glazing in the literal sense. The mineral mixture of a glaze melts during the firing process and forms a thin glass-like coating. Is it possible to highlight this glass layer and make the melting, the liquifying, visible?
