Elements of Air

Foam is something ephemeral, fragile, and temporary. Porcelain, on the other hand, is something solid and hard. Is it possible to preserve the lightness of foam in porcelain and thereby give it something ephemeral?

Experiment

Foam has volume—you can touch it and even pile it up, but as soon as you grasp it, it’s gone. The question was: Can heavy porcelain also be foamed, and can its structure be made permanently tangible through firing? It actually works. The foam structure itself can also be influenced and remains surprisingly stable after firing, depending on its formation.

Craft

I have developed a method for creating porcelain foam in varying volumes. The greater the volume, the more fragile the structure—this allows the material to be adapted to different usage.

Material

The series shows porcelain from a completely different perspective: What is normally heavy and solid becomes airy and surprisingly light.

Minimizing Waste

Irregularities and chance as part of the design reduce production waste, as the differences become a distinctive feature.

Use

Ceramic is an enormously durable product that can be used across generations. Therefore, products should be designed so that people enjoy using them. Things that people enjoy using aren’t quickly discarded. This too is a form of sustainability.

Resource-Efficient

The focus is on the porcelain and its natural color as well as possible surface textures, not on glazes. Colored glazes are completely avoided. Clay and clay remnants are largely collected, processed, and reused.

Unique Pieces in Series

All porcelain objects are designed and crafted by hand in the studio workshop. The foamed porcelain takes center stage in this series. Irregularities in form and material, as well as the visibility of the craft, are not flaws but intentional design elements. There is a beauty in chance that cannot be created manually or mechanically, so the characteristic structures of the objects emerge in an exciting space between control and chance—I create the conditions for their formation but leave their exact expression to the material itself.

Porcelain Foam Sphere

Each porcelain sphere with porcelain foam is handcrafted and differs in its porcelain foam structure, making each sphere a one-of-a-kind piece. The spheres are currently available in two sizes, Ø 85 mm and 60 mm, and can be ordered either glazed or unglazed. Each sphere is individually packaged.

Some handcrafted pieces from the series are available in the online shop. Or are you a retailer interested in selling some pieces in your store? Please feel free to contact me:
