Studio series 'Elements of Air'
Foam is something ephemeral and delicate. Porcelain, on the other hand, is something solid and hard. Is it possible to preserve the lightness of foam in porcelain—and thereby give it something ephemeral?
Materialexperiment
Foam has volume—you can touch it and even pile it up—but as soon as you grab it, it disappears. The question was: Can heavy porcelain also be foamed, and can its structure be made permanently tangible through firing? The studio developed a method that can produce porcelain foam in varying volumes. The greater the volume, the more fragile the structure—this allows the material to be adapted to different uses.
Minimizing Waste
As part of the design process, chance and irregularities are exciting and reduce production waste, as variation becomes a distinctive feature that is intentionally part of the design.
Resource-Efficient
The focus is on the porcelain and its natural color as well as possible surface textures, not on glazes. Colored glazes are completely avoided. Clay and clay remnants are largely collected, processed, and reused.
Material
The series shows porcelain from a completely different perspective: What is normally heavy and solid becomes airy and surprisingly light.

One-of-a-kind, in series
Porcelain Foam Sphere
Each sphere is handcrafted in the studio workshop and differs in the texture of its foamed porcelain. Every sphere is one of a kind. The foamed porcelain takes center stage in this series. Irregularities in form and material, as well as the visibility of the craft, are not flaws but intentional design elements. There is a beauty in chance that cannot be created by hand or machine, so the characteristic structures of the objects emerge in an exciting interplay of control and chance—I create the conditions for their formation but leave their exact expression to the material itself.
The spheres are currently available in two sizes: 85 mm and 60 mm, and come in either glazed or unglazed finishes. Each sphere is packed separately.
